Applying OCR technologies to digitized documents is an essential task in the preservation of ancient manuscripts information in Digital Archives. Square notation is a particular case of musical notation developed in Europe during the middle ages, and the amount of handwritten sources of this kind is so vast that it has not been completely quantified yet. We believe OCR can be an important tool for the conservation of this information. As part of the OCR process applied to musical notation, also referred as OMR (Optical Music Recognition), a staff detection and/or removal stage is usually performed to facilitate information retrieval from. In terms of improving the staff detection and removal results, some preprocessing stage can be added. In this paper we report some preliminary results on the effect of applying adaptive threshold techniques with different parameters to scanned images of musical manuscripts in square notation. These results are presented in terms of number of staves and staff lines successfully detected. |
