Influence of Muscle Fatigue on Performance at Power-Assisted Bicycles
Masashi Ohtaki, Tohru Kiryu (Niigata Univ.) MBE2008-75
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to design the control strategy of power-assisted bicycles, the pedaling skill and performance should be considered as well as the basic physical work capacity. We studied the influence of muscle fatigue on performance, grouping the muscle activation timing at the vastus lateralis and biceps femoris muscles in terms of motor control during cycling. Seventeen subjects volunteered in the field experiments for three different types of power-assisted bicycles. The result showed that the knee extension torque reflected the difference in muscle activation timing for the types of power-assisted bicycles. Thus, this approach allowed us to quantify the differences in the effect of power-assist and muscle activation timing during cycling.
