Diverse modulation of location memory for visual patterns by preference

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We examined the effect of preference for dot-patterns on location memory. Observers were asked to recall the locations of five dots (Experiment 1), seven dots (Experiment 2) and nine dots-pattern (Experiment 3) constituting patterns. And then they rated the preference of dot-patterns on a five-point scale. We classified dot-patterns as “like”, “neutral” and “dislike” patterns, based on preference rating scores. As a result, memory performance of the “like” and “neutral” rated dot-patterns was better than that of the “dislike” dot-patterns in Experiment 1, and in Experiment 2, there was no significant difference of three preference class. Moreover, performance in Experiment 3 was the best for the “dislike dot-patterns”. From the results mentioned above, it was suggested that the effect of preference on location memory for dots were depending on the number of the dots constituting patterns. Moreover, we examined whether this dependence on dot number can be explained by semantic level differences of dot patterns, using semantic differential (SD) method. By factor analysis with varimax rotation, three factors (Morphological factor, Evaluation factor and Potential factor) were extracted. The factor scores of dot-patterns were compared; there were significant differences between five dots-patterns and seven and nine dots-pattern but no significant differences between seven dots-patterns and nine dots-patterns. Therefore, we suggested that the preference effect on location memory may be obtained at the levels of perceptual processing, rather than semantic processing.
