Future photonic networks will require high-speed optical packet switches, which operate on a packet-by-packet basis while maintaining data in the optical domain. We recently developed a compact and simple widely tunable laser for a photonic packet switching by monolithically integrating a semiconductor double-ring resonator. The fabricated laser exhibits a wide tuning range of 50.0 nm with current injection of less than 5.2 mA. The low tuning current operation is indispensable for stable wavelength switching. More recently, a tunable wavelength converter was realized by integrating the tunable laser and an optical gate on a single chip. In this paper, we describe recent advancements of the lasers. |
