Design, fabrication and performance of the dual-band differential VCOs using a single dual-band resonator are presented. Contrary to the conventional multi-band VCOs switching several VCOs or resonators, it can realize multi-band performance by employing a single dual-band resonator and a switched supply voltage. With the use of this technique, a miniaturized size, better performance, and low cost can be achieved for the multi-band VCOs. The VCO demonstrates a dual-band performance of 0.95–1.12GHz (Band 1) with the supply voltage of 3.5V and the tuning voltage of 4 to 6V as well as 2.38–2.67 GHz (Band 2) with the supply voltage of 4V and the tuning voltage of 4 to 6.5V. The phase noise at 100kHz offset is better than -105dBc/Hz for Band 1 and -95dBc/Hz for Band 2. |
