A hybrid relay is composed of an electromagnetic relay (EMR) and an electric circuit in a metal or plastic shell, such as an electronic timing relay. Radiated electromagnetic interference generated by the electromagnetic relay is mainly from the electric arc when relay’s contacts separate. The radiated interference caused by the arc may strongly interfere with the nearby electric circuit. In the paper, the electric arc is measured during the operation of the electromagnetic relay. And spectra of the arc are obtained by Fourier method. A model of the hybrid relay is founded based on finite element method. And a thin shielding sheet made of copper is added in the model for protecting the electric circuit from electromagnetic noise generated by the electric arc. Shielding effectiveness of the copper sheet is quantitatively analyzed with the variation of the sheet's parameters. Because the frequency range of electromagnetic noise is wide, the composite sheet is applied to shield the interference. This sheet is composed of copper and iron, and its shielding effectiveness is calculated when the percentage of the iron sheet in whole shielding sheet is changed. Research in the paper is of great value for improving the electromagnetic compatibility of the hybrid relay and for reducing the electromagnetic interference generated by electric arc. |
