Interference Evaluation between Terrestrial Fixed Stations and Earth Stations onboard Vessels (ESVs) when using Narrowband and Spread Spectrum Signals

(in English) ESVs (Earth Stations onboard Vessels) are expected to provide a broadband connection in the maritime communication by use of satellite systems. Since they transmit in the Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) networks in the 6 GHz and 14 GHz bands (Earth-to-space), they should avoid unacceptable interference to Fixed Service Receivers (FSRs) in these bands. ITU-R Resolution 902 (WRC-03) resolves the minimum distances from the coast beyond which ESVs can operate without the prior agreement of any administration are 300 km and 125 km in the bands 6 GHz and 14 GHz, respectively. In this paper, we evaluate interference level from ESVs to FSRs when using narrowband and spread spectrum signals in ESVs. The results show that the spread spectrum technique mitigates interference to FSRs in terms of the interference criteria of C/I and I/N and can be employed as a transmission technique for ESV operations within the minimum distances.
