It was proposed that a field emission cathode with high efficiency could be prepared from carbon nanotubes distributed in an insulating film. The mechanical stability was expected to be increased by using the insulating layer which would act as a supporter to fix the carbon nanotubes. Because the dielectric constant of insulating layer is larger than that of vacuum, the field strength in the insulating layer is lower than in vacuum. This may result in decrease of effective field enhancement factor of the cathode prepared with carbon nano-tube distributed in the insulating film. Field emission cathodes were prepared by sol-gel method. The field emission current was detected in those cathodes. |
