Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) An EEG component, Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP), was used as an index of attentional focus in the visual field. SSVEPs are sinusoidally-evoked potentials induced by constantly flickering stimuli, having the same frequency as stimulus frequency. It is shown that attending to a flickering stimulus modulates both amplitude and phase synchronization of the frequency component of the evoked potential. We measured the temporal changes of amplitude and phase synchronization of SSVEPs to investigate the temporal characteristics of signal modulation accompanied by shifts of endogenous attention. Results showed the sustained temporal characteristics of attentional modulation in both amplitude and phase synchronization. In addition, we found that the performance of target detection task increased after the cue onset, suggesting the strong relationship between SSVEP and psychophysical results. Based on these results, temporal characteristics of visual attention were discussed.
