Adaptive Amplify-and-Forward Relaying for Cellular System

(in English) This paper presents an adaptive amplify-and-forward (AF)-type relaying method for the uplink in a cellular system in order to avoid unnecessary inter-cell interference enhancement and bandwidth reduction due to transmission relaying. The method adaptively selects the active relay stations (RSs) based on the path loss between each mobile terminal and the base station (BS) and that between each RS. In the paper, the throughput enhancement by using the proposed method especially for the user at cell edge is evaluated with the relay selection thresholds and beam width of the antennas of the RS as parameters. The computer simulations show that the use of directive antenna at RS transmitter very effective in reducing the other cell interference and the proposed method achieves approximately 40 times and 3.8 times higher cell edge throughput than the case without relaying and that with conventional AF-type relaying, respectively, assuming six RSs per cell. At the same time, the proposed method increases the average throughput by approximately 1.4 times compared to the case without relaying.
