Network coding is an effective method to improve channel efficiency by reducing the number of transmissions. Most existing network coding schemes proposed for unicast transmissions focus on scheduling where paths are already established. In addition, a fixed rate within the whole network is assumed, neglecting link rate heterogeneity. In this paper we propose a network coding based pseudo bidirectional relay scheme for wireless LAN, taking link quality into account. We aim to reduce the actual transmission time under rate adaptation. We propose three techniques to realize this objective. (i) Suggesting a criterion for bidirectional relay selection, which aggregates flows to enable network coding; (ii) Handling traffic asymmetry by hybrid relay schemes; (iii) Proposing a network-coding aware MAC protocol, where positive (ACK) or negative (NAK) acknowledgements are adopted to reflect the receive status. Back-off and retransmissions are introduced to further improve reliability. Numerical results show that compared with direct transmission without relay, the proposed scheme can effectively reduce per-packet transmission time by up to 35% in Rayleigh fading environment. |
