A Proposal and Evaluation of an ETT Estimation Method Using Received Signal Strength Indicator

(in English) There are a lot of links which have various quality of transmission in wireless mesh networks. The routing in consideration of the quality of link is necessary for efficient transmission. Expected Transmission Time (ETT) is a metric of link quality. It implies the expected time of successful transmission. Generally speaking, successful transmission ratio of packets from a sender to a receiver is measured and ETT is calculable from this value. If broadcast is used, ETT of several links can be measured at once. Although IEEE 802.11b provides multiple transmission rates, low-speed rate like 1 Mbps or 2 Mbps is used for broadcast. Therefore the efficient measurement method of ETT of multiple rates is required. In this study, we propose an estimation method in which ETT of each rate is simultaneously estimated by Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of probe packets. We may use a HELLO message of OLSR as a probe packet. We evaluate the effect of our proposed method by experiment and show that our proposed estimation method can achieve almost the same estimation accuracy of the estimation method which uses a measurement value of successful transmission ratio.
