Mitigation of Sidelobe Target Detection by Using Mainbeam Subspace

(in English) False alarm caused by sidelobe moving targets or clutter residue is serious problem for ground-based or shipboard radar. Especially multiple declarations of false alarm at arbitrary beam directions are much more serious problem for radar operation since it causes degradation of target tracking ability and displaying false information on radar display.
In this paper, we proposed a subspace-based method to mitigate sidelobe targets detection. Unlike sidelobe blanker, auxiliary antennas and following receiving channels are not required in this method. In addition to that, this method can be used not only to non-coherent signals but also to coherent signals, emanating from specular multipath for example, without any preprocessing such as spatial smoothing.
Principle of proposed method to detect sidelobe targets is to evaluate norm of projected eigenvector of sidelobe subspace onto predetermined mainbeam subspace. Results of computer simulation indicate that the proposed method shows good performance in mainbeam target scenario and sidelobe targets scenario respectively at reasonable SNR for target tracking mode operation.
