An L-band digitally-controlled, variable gain differential amplifier (VGA) is presented. It employs a bridged-T attenuator circuit between emitters of the differential pair and achieves a gain variation of 1 dB, 2 dB, 4 dB, and 8 dB by switching an attenuation level. By cascading the 4-bit VGAs, the maximum gain variation of 16 dB with 1 dB step can be realized. The implemented 0.35 m SiGe HBT digitally-controlled VGA demonstrates a gain variation from -7.4 dB to +9.1 dB with 1 dB step at 1 GHz. The input and output return losses are better than 13 dB and 9.5 dB, respectively. The best noise figure was 3.3 dB. The measured IIP3 are -7 dBm with Vcc = 6 V and Ic = 14.8 mA. |
