The number of osteoporosis patient is increasing every year in Japan. Recent years, multi-detector-row CT is widely used in clinical environment, and also expected for diagnosing osteoporosis. However, quantitative evaluation method of osteoporosis based on X-ray CT images is not defined. The aim of this paper is to elucidate bone-mineral-density (BMD) distributions in vertebral trabecular bones using X-ray CT images. BMD distributions in vertebral trabecular bones from the first thoracic vertebra to the fifth lumbar vertebra, which were obtained from X-ray CT images of 209 Japanese subjects, were determined in the present study. As a result of the analysis of them, there was no statistical significant difference of BMD distributions in vertebral trabecular bones from the eleventh thoracic vertebra to the fifth lumbar vertebra. Therefore, among these vertebrae, if BMD distribution of one vertebra is known, BMD distributions of the other vertebrae could be estimated based on the relationships shown by our research. |
