Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) To examine the tilt-translation ambiguity induced by the vestibular otolith organs, we measured horizontal and vertical eye movements during chair tilting in a driving simulator. Small horizontal convergence eye movements were elicited by visual stimulus, which consisted of a movie of a car moving forward. By contrast, the same visual stimuli elicited robust downward and horizontal convergence eye movements with backward chair tilting. The vestibular otolith organs may produce horizontal convergence as a vestibuloocular reflex that compensates for illusory forward translation during backward tilting. These results indicate that a virtual feeling of linear acceleration can be evoked using tilt-translation ambiguity.
