A Study on Physical Layer and MAC Layer Requirements for the Next Generation PON
Hiroaki Mukai, Seiji Kozaki, Akira Takahashi, Kiyoshi Shimokasa (Mitsubishi Electric) CS2008-7
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) PON (Passive Optical Network) achieves FTTH (Fiber To The Home) economically, by sharing an optical fiber between plural subscribers. Currently, 1Gbps class PONs are widely spread. The transmission capacity of PON tends to follow the evolution of Ethernet transmission rate. In the future, the demand for larger capacity PONs will be increased. Because PON is point to multi-point network, the method for equipment upgrade will be a problem. In this paper, we investigate the method of PON system upgrade, then give a consideration on the physical layer and MAC layer requirements for the Next Generation PON which enables the smooth upgrade.
