A semiautomatic method for extracting born contour from fluoroscopic image of the knee

(in English) In order to analyze knee motion after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), a 3-D model-based technique was developed by combining fluoroscopic image sequence of knee motion and 3-D model of prosthetic components. Knee motion analysis before TKA, however, has yet to be established, even though it is necessary to compare patient’s knee motion before and after TKA. To realize such analysis, we applied the 3-D model-based technique into knee motion analysis before TKA. But the problem is that bone contour of the knee is usually blurred, compared to that of prosthetic components, necessitating us to develop an accurate bone-contour extraction technique. Then, we developed a semiautomatic method capable of extracting bone contour iteratively from its initial one digitized manually. To evaluate its validity, we carried out several experiments, employing fluoroscopic images of 4 different knees. All empirical results suggested that our method would have a potential to extract accurate bone contour of the knee with high reproducibility.
