A three-demensional analysis of clavicular movement using open-MRI

(in English) Human shoulder joint has a complex bony structure consisting of humeral, scapular, and clavicle. In order to figure out motion mechanism of this joint, we have been studying in-vivo shoulder movements, particularly humeral elevation within the scapular plane, using open-MRI and a 3D/3D registration technique. In order to clarify entire shoulder movement, we have to analyze movements of scapulohumeral joint, acromioclavicular joint and sternoclacular joint simultaneously. We have already proposed a registration-based motion analysis for scapulohumeral joint. Then, we applied this technique into motion analysis for acromioclavicular joint and sternoclacular joint. As the first step, we evaluated the reproducibility of a proposed clavicular coordinate system and the accuracy of a registration-based motion estimation through several experiments. In addition, we estimated a subject’s 3-D clavicular motion during humeral elevation. All empirical results suggested that our clavicular coordinate system has high reproducibility and the proposed method enabled us to estimate clavicular motion on an accuracy level required in clinic.
