A Study on Communication Quality Estimation Using Multiple Packet Size Probing in CDMA2000 1xEV-DO System

(in English) Recently, it is becoming important to grasp and improve the communication
quality in a cellular data service as the market grows.

In regard to the TCP throughput, a major communication quality metric,
there are a variety of active measurement methods for wired environments.
However, it is diffcult to apply them to cellular networks whose bandwidth resources
are limited, because most of these techniques transmit a large amount of
probing packets. Although some estimation methods use small amount of probing
packets, it is still a challenge to apply them for wireless environment due to
its unstable availability of bandwidth resource. Furtheremore, these method
cannot estimate TCP throughput directly.

In this paper, we propose a method to estimates TCP throughput in cellular networks
based on the transmission time of probing packets with multiple sizes. Specifically,
we established a model that TCP throughput in wireless network is composed of physical
bandwidth and its fluctuation elements. We also evaluated the model quantitatively with real measurement on a commercial cellular network.
