Among several timing synchronization protocols proposed so far,
flooding time synchronization protocol (FTSP) is now accepted as one of the most energy-efficient
and highest-precision synchronization protocols for wireless sensor networks.
FTSP is based on a periodic flooding of time synchronization messages
in a tree-like network of sensor nodes.
Therefore, a certain amount of degradation in synchronization precision is temporally observed when the root node is lost and reelected.
Also, unexpected observations show that the synchronization precision can still be improved by using less synchronization points than in the original FTSP,
for stable networks in the experiments with Mica2Dot platform.
Then, the underlying mechanism of the above observations is analyzed, and as a result, the following two components are turned out to be problematic;
(a) a long term modulation of crystal oscillators, and (b) the resulting error in clock drift (skew) estimation.
Based on this insight, an effective improvement of FTSP with Mica2Dot platform is realized for robust and better synchronization
by using somewhat redundant, two sets of independent estimations for synchronization offset between sender and receiver nodes.
Higher synchronization precision is then constantly obtained by this improvement in systematic experiments including root reelection process. |
