A study on the adaptive priority control scheme for urgency information transport in wireless sensor networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Authors investigate a novel wireless network system to detect the early stage symptom of disaster occurrence in houses or buildings using sensor networks and notify .to remote users by cellular networks. For this purpose, we present a novel adaptive prioritized packet sending control in sensor networks. Firstly the proposed scheme employs a dynamic packet sending rate control in both source node and relay node where they change sending rate depending on the predetermined urgency level of sensor data within the packet. Second, prioritized MAC protocol is introduced into each node where packets with more urgent sensor data are given higher priority, and are transmitted with shorter backoff time, leading to shorter delay. The proposed scheme is implemented in Crossbow’s MOTE MICAz sensor nodes and evaluated. The results of evaluation indicate that the proposed scheme substantially reduces packet transmission delay to a sink node as well as packet loss rate, compared to existing transmission scheme that only employs dynamic packet sending rate control.
