Cross section of plastic-deformed metal rods is observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). As increasing tensile load, open cracks are increased in metal rods. It is also expected that closed cracks in metal rods increase. And then, in the cross section of the metal rod loaded the greatest strain, grown or expanded voids that form the dimples at the fracture found largely. Ultrasonic waves might be affected by Rayleigh scattering because of the voids. Since the second harmonic component is double frequency of the fundamental component, the second harmonic component is attenuated greatly compared with subharmonic component that is half frequency of the fundamental component. These results demonstrate that relation between the stain of the metal rods and the detected value of the second harmonic and the subharmonic components which authors have been reported is appropriate. |
