The effects of satellite diversity on Ku- and Ka-band rain attenuation were investigated in about ten propagation paths with azimuth angle separations of 10 to 70 deg, using the radio waves continuously received from JCSAT, SCC, BS, and CS-3 (N-STAR) at Osaka Electro-Communication University (OECU) in 1995-1998 and 2003-2007. It is found that the improvement of unavailability for the time percentages due to rain attenuation is increased, as the azimuth separation of the propagation paths is increased. The improvement is, however, slightly decreased as the difference of elevation angles arises. These azimuth and elevation angle dependencies are shown to be described as a simple exponential function of their differences. The magnitude of the improvements does not exceed a factor of 2 or 3, as far as the cumulative time percentages are greater than 0.01%, while recent observations at OECU and Kyoto University (Uji) demonstrate that it may exceed a factor of 10 as the time percentages become smaller than 0.01% with the Ku-band attenuation of greater than about 10 dB. |
