For the applications of diversity reception and MIMO antennas for small terminals in mobile communication systems, small mutual coupling and correlation between antennas are required for the array with small antenna spacing. The antenna arrangement with orthogonal polarizations is effective to reduce mutual coupling between antenna elements, however, this arrangement can not apply to all the applications and the other techniques are introduced. This report discusses the mutual coupling between small antennas using the definition of antenna clearance proposed to examine the electrical volume of antennas. We present the relation between mutual coupling and variation ratio of input impedance used to evaluate the antenna clearance of test antennas. We also present the numerical examples for the mutual coupling of small antenna arrays and discuss the guideline to reduce the mutual coupling. |
