| (in English) | Avian isthmo-optic (IO) neurons project to the contralateral retina, and are involved in local and transient gain enhancement of retinal output. In the present study, we recorded unit activities of the IO neurons in the Japanese quail performing visual search tasks. We initially mapped the receptive field of the IO neurons, using flashing spots of light on an LCD monitor. If a target stimulus was presented in their receptive field, the IO neurons were passively activated. Also, the IO neurons spontaneously fired 0-200 ms before head saccades orienting to the target stimulus that was presented in their receptive fields. Conversely, the IO neurons were suppressed before head saccades orienting to the target stimulus presented outside their receptive fields. Thus the IO neurons may contribute to active visual search, by enhancing output of the local retinal area that perceives the target stimulus. | |
