Characterization of the Radio Link of Body-Worn Helical Antennas With Regard To the Antenna Location, Radiation Pattern, and Polarization at 430MHz

(in English) This paper presents the path loss characteristics of body-worn helical antennas with regard to the antenna location, radiation pattern, and polarization in the 430 MHz band. Using a small helical antenna with a well defined figure-of-eight radiation pattern and polarization with sufficiently large radiation efficiency we have taken an analytical approach to characterize the radio link, in order to gain an understanding of the path loss characteristics needed to design of body-worn antenna systems. Further to our investigation, we include a discussion about the radiation patterns of body-worn antennas that provide smaller path loss. Furthermore, experiments were carried out to confirm the validity of the analysis. It is concluded from the study that, in body-worn radio communication systems, it is advantageous from the path loss point of view that the maximum radiation of the antenna is directed longitudinally along the human body, with the polarization state set normal to the surface of the body. These findings can be used as guidelines for designing body-worn antennas for WBAN systems that provide smaller path loss
