Large-scale NxN and 1xN optical switches are indispensable in constructing the future optical packet-switching networks. In this paper, we will investigate the novel type of optical-phased-array (OPA) 1xN semiconductor switch both theoretically and experimentally. Since the number of modulator stage does not increase with the port count N, we show that it has superior scalability compared to the conventional scheme of cascading 1x2 switches under realistic conditions. We then fabricate InP/InGaAsP 1x5 optical-phased-array switch and demonstrate basic characteristics, such as wideband operation over C-band (1520-1580 nm) and the switching response faster than 10 ns. These results suggest the applicability of the switch to ultra-high-capacity WDM packet switching node. |
