In bronchoscope tracking by tiny electromagnetic position sensor, it is indispensable to obtain the relationship between the coordinate systems of the position sensor and the reference images. In our privious method, we estimated the rigid transformation matrix between the coordinate systems by matching the outputs of the position sensor and the medial line of the bronchi extracted from the CT image taken prior to bronchoscopy. However, since the bronchial deformation occurs after CT image acquisition, it may be difficult to perform accurate registration
by the previous method. In order to solve this problem, we propose in this paper a stable bronchoscope tracking method for bronchial deformation without fiducial markers. In this method, we estimate the non-rigid transformation between the coordinate systems by the Chui’s non-rigid point matching algorithm. This non-rigid transformation is estimated by matching the outputs of the position sensor and the artificial 3D point set scattered in bronchi regions. We applied the proposed method to a rubber bronchial model. Experimental results showed
that the proposed method could reduce the average registration error from 10.1 mm to 3.2 mm. |
