Comparison of birefringence between microwave measurement and theoretical calculation for liquid crystal loaded CPW-FE phase shifter.

(in English) The effective permittivity of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) and dielectric birefringence (Δε) in a liquid crystal microwave phase shifter are calculated with taking into account of the molecular orientation in a liquid crystal layer. The effective permittivity and dielectric birefringence are determined by liquid crystal molecular orientation and CPW high-frequency electric field. Using continuum theory of liquid crystal, we obtain the liquid crystal molecular orientation controlled by a bias voltage. The calculations of the bias voltage dependence of the effective permittivity qualitatively agree with measurements. Furthermore, we can confirm the mechanism of the change in permittivity by the calculations.
