A Study on Statistical Characteristics of Signal Distortion Due to Nonlinear Amplification in OFDM Systems
Masaaki Harada (KIT) WBS2007-62
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Statistical characteristics of nonlinear distortion due to the amplification in orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems are investigated in this report. In OFDM systems, paralleled information symbols modulate multiple subcarriers, and then they are summed up. The signal is known to have large dynamic range and amplitude fluctuation. Such kind of signals is distorted in the amplification due to the nonlinearity of the amplifier; that results in performance degradation. The power of distorted OFDM signal may be a random variable because the effect of nonlinear amplifier depends on the shape of input signal. Due to this fact, signals normalized by sample average of distorted OFDM signal power are considered in this statistical study. Nonlinear distortions are approximated to random variables with normal distribution according to observed samples of distorted signals. Based on the approximation, the average bit error rate (BER) probability in the presence of nonlinearlity is analyzed. The validity of the approximation is verified in the numerical examples. The BER performance obtained from the analysis is compared with the one from the simulation, and good agreement is confirmed in the use of solid state power amplifier (SSPA).
