This paper investigates the dynamics of circadian oscillations. For this purpose, a new Lyapunov methodology is introduced to stability analysis of biological and biochemical systems made of networks of scalar dissipative systems. Since each scalar variable describing a substance naturally involves nonlinear autonomous and interactive dynamics in the network, the dissipativity is usually asymmetric with respect to the balance point. This paper shows how to make use of input-to-state stability (ISS) and integral input-to-state stability (iISS) characterizations of subsystems in estimating the behavior of the whole network. The most unique feature is the explicit construction of a Lyapunov function of the whole system. This paper illustrates the Lyapunov-type analytical approach by determining the necessary ranges of parameters for maintaining oscillations of a circadian model in the cells of Drosophila. |
