Piezoelectric properties of potassium niobate ceramics synthesized with hydrothermal powders

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Potassium niobate (KN) is one of the promising lead-free piezoelectric materials as an environmental friendly material. Non-doped and Mn-doped potassium niobate (KNbO3) ceramics were synthesized with the fine powders obtained by a hydrothermal method. The hydrothermal method utilizes a chemical reaction in solutions. The low reaction temperature (200℃) and the self-assembly growth resulted in high quality KNbO3 and KNbO3-Mn powders. The potassium hydroxide (KOH) was used as a potassium source in the hydrothermal method; then proposed process was free from potassium carbonate (K2CO3) problem; hygroscopic and vaporization properties which prevented high quality KNbO3-ceramics. From the admittance measurements, the piezoelectric performance of this KNbO3-Mn ceramics was confirmed. The resonance frequencies corresponded to the radial and thickness vibration modes exited by the piezoelectric transversal effect.
