Using a 0.13-um-gate-length InP-HEMT technology, we developed a simple pulse generator circuit (PG) with a logical negative-AND-based core for realizing ultra wide-band impulse radio (UWB-IR) systems that process more than 10 Gb/s. The core has cascode transistors and a balance circuit, minimizing the Miller effect and maximizing the switching performance. The PG created an extremely short pulse whose full width at half maximum was a record and only 7.6 ps. The shortest pulse had a good quality. A jitter generated in the PG was 101 fs rms and a 10-MHz-offset phase noise was -102 dBc/Hz in the 20th or 80-GHz harmonics. The performance of the PG makes it possible to realize various UWB-IR systems that operate at over 100 GHz. |
