Slowing light in Bragg reflector waveguides induce large change in equivalent refractive index. This novel phenomenon enables us to enlarge the crossing-angle of total-internal-reflection type optical switches and to reduce switching length of Mach-Zehnder (MZ) switches, resulting in miniaturization of waveguide optical switches. Change in equivalent refractive index is increased by a factor of more than 10 near the cut-off wavelength, which enables us to realize total-internal –reflection optical switches with a crossing-angle of over 40 degree and MZ switches with a switching length of less than 20μm. Based on these predictions, we propose a novel compact optical switch circuit for future photonic networks.
