Degradation of several organic pollutants such as endocrine disruptors in dilute aqueous solutions was studied focusing on the method by the simultaneous irradiation of ultrasound (US) and ultraviolet (UV) light with a photocatalyst of TiO2, i.e., sonophotocatalysis. Sonophotocatalytic degradation rates of 2,4-dichlorophenol, p-chlorophenol, 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole, bisphenol A, and di-n-butyl phthalate were faster than those by US, UV, or UV with TiO2 alone. First-order rate constants of sonophotocatalysis were approximately sum of those of sonolysis and photocatalysis, implying each method worked substantively without suppression. Significant enhancement was obtained for the decomposition product of CO2 by sonophotocatalysis in all cases. Therefore, sonophotocatalysis of organic pollutants in water is promising because of the synergistic effect of mineralization appeared. |
