Limitation of Directive Gain of Polyhedral Switching Array Antenna

A conformal array antenna arranged on the curved surface features to steer a beam in the hemisphere. However, it is necessary to arrange the antenna elements uniformly on the sphere to obtain the coverage gain efficiently. Therefore, the polyhedron is suited for arranging the antenna element uniformly.
This paper proposes the configuration of a polyhedral array antenna arranged on a polyhedron. Here, the relation between the size of an array antenna and the minimum coverage gain of the proposed array antenna is discussed. Moreover, in order to achieve higher the minimum coverage gain, we consider exciting the several antenna elements on the truncated icosahedron. It is found that the minimum coverage gain is limited in the case of one element is excited. And, the minimum coverage gain of truncated icosahedron is the 10dBi. Moreover, it is shown that the minimum coverage gain of the icosahedron array is 12dBi when the several elements are excited simultaneously. |
