Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Trials on the transmission of olfactory information together with audio/visual information are currently being conducted in the field of multimedia. However, continuous emission of a odor creates problems of human adaptation to the lingering olfactory stimuli. During long movie scenes, viewers can not detect an emitted odor continuously. To overcome this problem we applied pulse ejection to repeatedly emit odor for short periods of time to ensure the olfactory stimuli do not remain in the air to cause adaptation. Therefore we examined olfactory characteristic of human for pulse ejection. Then it is important to synchronize odor stimulation with breathing pattern. It is not practical to use a breath sensor that synchronizes the emission of odor with the user's breathing pattern. The developed method provided the user with an olfactory experience over a long duration without the use of a breath sensor, avoiding adaptation.
