Development of Air Jet Interface Without Stereo Display
Yuriko Suzuki, Minoru Kobayashi (NTT) MVE2007-42
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We have developed the Air Jet Interface, an untethered virtual reality system using air pressure to provide force feedback. Virtual objects are presented using a projection-based stereo display. When a user touches a virtual object with an “air receiver”, the system releases air from an array of nozzles that are embedded in the table. The air impacts the air receiver held by the user, presenting the feeling that he or she is actually touching the object. The stereo display is an important component to make this feeling of touching an object convincing. However, we have received demand for a system that does not use the stereo display. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a new Air Jet Interface system that uses a simpler 2-dimensional display instead of stereo display.
