A method based on the glass structure change is proposed to provide wavelength-insensitive coupling for fused fiber couplers. After fused fiber couplers are fabricated, the coupling regions are heated unequally by arc discharge and cooled rapidly. The glass structure change induced by heating and cooling generates the unbalance index changes in two identical fibers constituting the fused fiber couplers, and brings about the phase mismatch between the fibers. The phase mismatch reduces the maximum power transfer, and results in the wavelength-insensitive response. The proposed method is applied to wavelength-flattening fused fiber couplers with different cross sectional shapes, and it becomes clear that the method is effective for reduction of the wavelength dependence. |
