| (in English) | Abstract In this paper, the instantaneous frequency of a wave is defined as the time derivative of the instantaneous phase and the method to obtain the instantaneous frequency and its properties are discussed. The orthogonal wave is necessary to compute the instantaneous phase. The spectrum of the orthogonal wave is obtained by multiplying to the spectrum of the original wave. The inverse Fourier transform of the spectrum is the orthogonal wave in the time domain. This method is the same as the use of the analytic signal. When the wave is expressed by a numerical sequence, the difference of the sampled value is used instead of the differentiation by time. The sampling frequency should be very high and the difference at a point “n” should be obtained by using data at points “n-1” and “n+1” in order to remove the bias error. If the original wave contains more than one component, the instantaneous frequency can be negative in some periods. The reason is explained by using a vector diagram. The explanation of the instantaneous frequencies of the AM and FM signal follows. Lastly, it is shown that the instantaneous frequency of a semi-infinite sinusoidal wave takes twice of the frequency of the sinusoid at the time when the signal starts to be non zero, though the instantaneous frequency of a steady sinusoid is constant. | |
