A field emission microscopy (FEM) image of individual multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) with clean surface exhibits six pentagons introduced at the tip apex, and a behavior of single ad-molecule with adsorption/desorption on the pentagon is also observable. To clarify the electron emission properties of MWNT, FEM images were dynamically observed under a various atmosphere of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. In this paper, the typical images obtained under these atmosphere are shown, and discuss the origins of the phenomena at a molecular level. Furthermore, a nano-focused X-ray radiography system equipped with a MWNT cathode is introduced as one of industrial applications of carbon nanotube. |
