A Study of Diagonal Newton's Method for Optimizing EUD-Based IMRT Plans

(in English) The intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an effective therapeutic technique for the treatment of tumors in the human body without inflicting serious damage for normal tissues. For designing desired IMRT plans, we consider an optimization problem of scalar nonlinear objective function based on the equivalent uniform dose (EUD). As an iteration method for optimizing the function, we employed diagonal Newton's method instead of standard Newton's method. By eliminating undiagonal elements of the Hesse matrix, it is expected that the computational cost can be cut drastically. In this report, we derive formulas to compute the diagonal elements by a computer program. We also discuss the computational time of the developed IMRT simulator with the formulas.
