Bismuth-based erbium-doped fiber (Bi-EDF) has high gain per unit length due to its solubility of erbium ions greater than 6,000 ppm. In addition, emission spectrum from Bi-EDF is broader than conventional silica-based erbium-doped fibers. Bi-EDF enables us to shorten not only cavity-length of fiber lasers, but also pulse width of mode-locked fiber lasers. In this report, we demonstrate sub-picosecond pulse generation by nonlinear polarization-rotation in a Bi-EDF. |
