Objective assessment of speech comprehension using electroencephalography and m-sequence modulation technique

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) There have been technical difficulties in the application of EEG/ERP to continuous stimuli e.g. speech processing. Repeated measurements for signal averaging requires a long recording session. In order to circumvent the problems, we introduced amplitude modulation by m-sequence, which is a pseudorandom number sequence often used for signal encoding, because of its simple generation methods compared with its length, uniformity and bandwidth. Stimulus-related response components can be effectively extracted by computing a cross-correlation function between the modulator m-sequence and the resulting EEG (Matani et al., 2005; Sutter, 2001) with robustness against noise. Here we report recent developments of our application to speech comprehension reported in (Takeichi et al., 2007, Neuroscience Research, 57, 314).
