For communications of persons with motor disabilities, single switches for computer operation have been developed by using assistive technology. At present, many different kinds of such switches are commercially available. Among them, we have to select an appropriate switch for each patient. For patients with progressive motor disabilities like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, however, the switch has to be updated frequently according to the progress of the disease. In order to reduce the number of such updating, we developed a versatile single switch applicable to a wide variety of motor disabilities, using an array of photo-reflective sensors. This switch is a sort of motion sensitive non-contact switch with both a relatively high sensitivity and a wide range of detective field and direction. Experiments using index-finger motions demonstrated that the switch could satisfy the basic conditions required as a versatile switch. |
