Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and nerve-intractable disease. In order to ensure their difficulties in communication, they usually use a "single switch" for operating computers. Conventional switches, however, are not necessarily satisfactory for ALS patients, primarily due to their positioning difficulty. Then, we have been developing a photo-reflective sensor-based versatile single switch. This paper describes its trial production with an improved sensitivity and its usability evaluation. Experiments with operation environments of ALS patients demonstrated that our switch has a high operability as well as usability for operating computers by means of input assistance software.
