A Congestion Control Algorithm for Low-Latency Ethernet LAN Communications

(in English) Ethernet is seeking for its new applications to CPU-CPU and CPU-I/O communications used in, for example, a PCI-Express extension technology called ExpressEther, or massive parallel computing in cluster system or data center. Since these communications require very short transmission latency without any packet losses in the network, we propose an Ethernet MAC technology providing end-to-end (MAC-to-MAC) packet retransmission and congestion control. In this paper, we propose a MAC-to-MAC congestion control algorithm aiming very low transmission latency. The proposed scheme employs delay-based congestion control and we extend it with a probing mechanism for fast start and a RTT prediction mechanism for quick response to congestion epochs, resulting in short queuing delay. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves 10 times shorter latency compared to communications using TCP and 2-3 times shorter latency compared to plain delay-based congestion controls.
