A new amplitude modulation scheme and its transmitter architecture are proposed. It modulates a constant envelope radio frequency (RF) signal, which may be the carrier wave or angle-modulated, with pulse-width modulated (PWM) amplitude signal by on-off keying as “burst width modulation” at the final stage. Through a band-pass filter, the burst-width modulated signal is transformed to an amplitude modulated transmitting signal whose envelope is proportional to the duty ratio of the PWM signal. The final stage amplifier can be operated on class-C bias point or by class-F mode in saturation region with high power efficiency at any time since the envelopes of input signals is constant as EER (Envelope Elimination and Restoration), or zero. In this talk, the signal processing of the proposed scheme is shown and the spurious characteristics as well as the criterion for selecting the PWM carrier frequency are discussed theoretically. This scheme is applicable to arbitrary modulation, band-limited PSK, multilevel QAM, and etc. |
