This paper discusses that qualia, which are proposed in the Generative Lexicon framework (Pustejovsky 1995), provide emprical tools for semantic analysis of lexical relations in derivational morphology. Through a detailed analysis of the English suffix –er (walker, printer, freighter, villager), I attempt to show that denotations are fixed for deverbal nouns by referring to specific qualia of base verbs or nouns. In the course of discussion, the relation between qualia and a lexical ontology will also be explicated. |
